Thomsons and Kleits in the Cape : Some photos of the first week with Don, Carolyn, Naomi and Sasha Thomson, and Solomon, Carol and Naomi Kleit. Sol made a camp fire a couple of nights ago, and Naomi toasted marshmallows. Don and Naomi blew bubbles solely for Sahsa's entertainment, and a snail crawled up a window. We didn't eat the snail.

Canyon Lake : We went to Canyon Lake yesterday, northeast of Phoenix. The lake was formed in the 1920's by the Mormon Flats dam on the Salt River. It is a breathtaking area. We traveled on a paddle wheeler named Dolly. The most exciting part of the trip was the sighting of a family of long horned sheep. I normally don't post videos, but this was a worthwhile exception.

New Adventures : Yesterday our adventure was a trip to Food City which caters to Mexican tastes and has a small Kosher department. It has a wonderful selection of flours, peppers, tortillas and tripe. Fortunately Peter is learning to relax. Today we saw two burrowing owls in the parking lot of the dollar store. Then we went to the (very) small farmers market in downtown Casa Grande. Omitted are photographs from Target and Wallmart, as they can be easily downloaded.

Cactus Fly In at Casa Grande : Lynda, Marlena and I went to the Cactus Fly In (http://cactusflyin.org/ ) at the Casa Grande airport. The planes were of all propellor driven varieties, including a couple of war planes older than me. Purely for the amusement of Lynda and Marlena, I tripped over a wire and bled profusely from the knee and elbow. Nurse Lynda tended to me, as did the Casa Grande fire department. I can still hear Marlena laughing.

The Face of Summer and Wasps : The true face of Summer in the Cape is chip, shown here in all his glory. In addition, a group of wasps took shelter in the smoker grill. Despite being burned out once, and their nests destroyed, they came back for a second try. They apparently communicate touching heads. I saw six together in a circle last night, head-to-head. Not quite sure about a permanent fix. Any suggestions?

Two of Alice and one of Ari and Tovah : Alice, Micah, Holly, Lulu, Donovan, Jessica, Ari and Tovah all left today. The house is much too quiet, and I have no one to make my coffee tomorrow morning or cook me fajitas, or bark at me. They'll be back soon, thankfully. Last night Alice showed off her "Mommy's Flower Girl" shirt. This morning, while Holly was doing some laundry, Marlena spotted this scene in the laundry room of Alice's beach wear. Early this afternoon, we guided Jessica and Ari to the Eastham side of Rock Harbor to scope out photo sites for the wedding photographer. Mar and Jessica did a thorough search while Ari, Tovah and I stayed near the cars.

The Past Few Days : Not much doing the past few days. The heat and humidity have kept us indoors. Micah taught Alice how to play chess. He also replaced the kitchen faucet. Ari and Jessica came up Thursday night. Ari made fajitas, which were quite yummy. Jessica worked on the wedding programs - Alice got the first one; her fan. Micah found a Triumph sports bike in the metal pile at the transfer station which he expects to rehab. And now, we're waiting for the rain.

First Tamron Shots : Sorry about the quickies. Just took these in available light in the living room. The vignetting on the first shot was because I had put the lens shade on incorrectly. London March 2. 2010 : On our second full day, Hilarie guided us to Parliament Square and along the Embankment towards St. Paul's. We took buses to and from the Tower, and learned how to navigate the bus system; at least well enough to get back to the hotel. London February 28 - March 1 2010 : From February 28 - March 6, 2010 we made our first visit to London. Actually, our first trip to Europe. For most of our stay we were escorted by my cousin, Hilary Rose, who walked us to the palace, down the Mall, through Trafalgar and down Whitehall; and helped us navigate the buses to and from the Tower, St. Paul's and the Millenium Bridge - and plenty of places in between. She made our stay interesting, informative and comfortable. We can't imagine what it would have been like without her. Quartzsite Palm Springs : Continuing our trip to Casa Grande, Sunday and Monday we travelled to Palm Springs, via Quartzsite, AZ. Quartzsite is far and wide the oddest place we've ever been to. There are few buildings, and those that are either belong to chain joints - Carl Jrs. being the worst - gas stations and the occasional restaurant and jerky-joint. Palm Springs is no less strange in its own way, just much wealthier. Both are outposts in the desert; homages to man's willingness to do most anything to find a berth, a broad and some booze.

The Cattle Come a'callin' : Saturday we went to Shamrock farms, a dairy farm about 18 miles west of Casa Grande. The tour was interesting, but overly anthropomorphized the cows, especially since after their milk producing years - about five - they disappear from the farm. The cows are born and raised on the farm - the bull calves go away - and are treated very well. They're milked twice a day, and are very easy to train to go in and out of the milking bins on their own, lead by an alpha female. Their lives on the farm are as stress free as possible.

First full day in Casa Grande : It is so good to be away from the cold. Yesterday, Lynda and Marlena went shopping. I hung out with Peter and Jason. We went to his latest property acquisitions. Pete's been buying distressed houses, rehabs them and rents them out. He provides decent housing at affordable prices; a very fine public service (don't tell him I said so). Mar found piles of cotton and sheep on the way back from shopping. The countryside here is fascinating. The land is flat and surrounded by mountains and mesas; like being on a dry seabed punctuated by islands. Casa Grande was, and still is, largely agricultural; cotton, cattle, sheep and alfalfa. It's been developed with housing complexes and shopping centers, but there are large swaths of vacant land between the housing complexes that are still agricultural. I got a kick out of the juxtaposition of sheep, houses and mountains.

Chanukah 12 12 2009 : Among the many gifts we received the most exciting was the gift that Jessica gave all of us by agreeing to marry Ari. We are incredibly fortunate. All of our sons are handsome, accomplished men. Our daughters-in-law, present and future, are beautiful, very, very smart and good friends. Our grandchildren are magnificent, funny, gorgeous, smart and endearing. Ari and Jess gave me a flash diffuser, and all of these photos were taken with it. A couple of the shots are simply experimental. As usual, I do not hold back from their admiring public any photos of Sam, Harry, Ben, Alice or Naomi. Gut yom tov. How sweet it is.

Whispering Walls : I was born across the street from the Whispering Walls, the large Civil War monuments that have walls with odd acoustic characteristics. Four out of five today : We had our usual play day with Alice, and went to the Art Museum for lunch and the Gorky exhibit, which she spoke highly of after. Later we met Ari, Sam, Harry and Ben at Famous Dave's for dinner. Naomi was otherwise engaged, although Alice kept on finding pictures of Baby Nomi around the house - we have a few. The Kleit Cousins : Sol, Carol and Naomi were kind enough to host the meeting of the five Kleit Cousins. Prior to that, we had the honor of Miss Alice dining with us for lunch, and inhaling bananas. Later that day, Miss Naomi and Miss Alice shared bon mots, and Messers. Samuel, Harry and Ben joined us for cuisine du pizza a la Phoenixville. Miss Alice did have a dramatic moment, apparently frightened by a coat and hat hanging askew. Mr. Samuel calmed her down with offer of a football and a phone.

Goose, Gander, Goslings : Only one photo from yesterday. The weather has not been to my liking, so I'm not doing much shooting. I went for a two hour swim in Herring Pond yesterday, and found these geese on the beach of an unoccupied house. I took this on my outbound leg. When I came back, the goslings were swimming and splashing. I was too far away to capture that, unfortunately. The second shot was the closest I could get.

Pond Grass : I went for my usual swim at Herring Pond yesterday. The grass was much taller than the day before, especially the part closest to the herring run. That's a fairly cool part of the pond - the water gets much warmer the further from shore you are - and it may be the most nutrient rich. I don't know, of course, simply a guess. I've always wanted a house on the pond, but the prices are way beyond are reach. Yesterday chilled those desires. The noise from the crowd on the beach was very loud even at the opposite end of the pond.

First D10 Pond Photos : Here's the first group from the pond. I like the underwater resolution and color balance. The blurring in some of the shots is from water on the lens. It does a decent job on land - not as good as the G9, but passable. It's very light, and pretty easy to handle. It's a little tricky to single-hand - there should be a thumb rest. But it's worth the price.

The Orleans Firebirds : We went to the Orleans Firebirds v Brewster White Caps game last night in Orleans. There are no stands, just a gently sloping hill. The game started at 7, but we brought our chairs and blankets at 4 to get a good location. It was windy and cold. Sam got a Firebirds hat and Ben bought the raffle tickets. We didn't win anything. The Boys At The Pond : The boys and I went to Great Pond for a swim late this afternoon. Sam and I like it at that time. It's quiet then, and the four of us had the place pretty much to ourselves. The water was warm, and the air was clear with almost no humidity. I brought the underwater housing for the G9 and took some "water baby" shots. I think the one of Harry turned out best. I'm fascinated by the safety rope floats, and trued to capture them looking up from under water.

Beast and Birds : We bought an oriole feeder today. The folks at Birdwatchers told us to fill it with grape jelly. Since we had none, Marlena put an orange half in it. No orioles, but house finches loved it. I took those photos through a screen. The chipmunk is part of the entertainment. This is the first one I can identify. It (I can't tell chipmunk gender) has a notch in its left ear. And this is the latest iteration of the shed. It's inspired by a Canadian yard art exhibit we saw a couple of years ago. Canadian yard art has as much to to with art as Canadian cuisine has to do with edible food. But, it is an inspiration.

Birds and Beasts : Small things in back yards. Almost prosaic, but very entertaining. Watching birds, chipmunks and squirrels earning a living in their antic ways. You learn much from watching them if you watch them with the simple respect that they are doing what they must do to stay alive. Darwin studied small things in his back yards: earthworms as much as anything else. You learn about life and its universal requirements. It just takes a very long time of sitting and watching before the lessons become clear. The most important is that they're not doing what their doing for us; they're doing for themselves. Goldfinches are luminescent, which makes them hard to photograph. They are sometimes to bright for the medium. They spook easily. Chipmunks look chronically angry and mean. Those are human terms, but they're descriptive. Squirrels act as if there's nothing else in the world except themselves and leave when they're disturbed in seeming annoyance not fear. The two small brown birds may be finches of some kind or pine siskins. It's hard to tell if their beaks are small or sharp enough for siskins. But they behaved in a veyr un-finch-like manner, just sitting and eating without bother of my presence.

First Sunset : Yesterday was the first clear day for sunset pictures since we've arrived. I've taken many, maybe too many, sunset pictures over the past 29 years. Last night was unusual. The air was very quiet and the bay was barely moving. (The no-see-ums were having a field day.) The water was an unusual pale, pastel blue. There was a crowd of people who started leaving as soon as the sun went below the horizon. I told them to stay, because the best part of sunset is after the sun sets.

June 14 and 15 : Yesterday there was finally bright sunlight in the late afternoon. I took these shots at Nauset Light Beach, and did a little bit of adjustment in raw. The next page are us with our happy smiles after a day of gardening today. Hopefully, things will grow if we ever get more than 1/2 hour of sun per day. Some Photos Today : Me working on the vegetable garden. When we come back in June, I'm going to add some topsoil and manure. The new section gets more Sun than the old section, so I think I'll do tomatoes and marigolds. Not sure what to plant in the old section. Any suggestions for shade loving vegetables? There's a photo of Mar resting on the screened porch, and I decided to take some self-portraits (something I don't enjoy) and some stabs at minor abstractions (or impressions or abstracted impressions; who knows). We went to the memorial service for Susan Orant today. She died of cancer this Winter. We met Susan and John almost twenty five years ago when we were renting on Thumpertown. She and Marlena hit it off immediately and became fast friends. John and I sort of were along for the ride. Susan was a brilliant gardener and John is an accomplished artist in wood and glass with the neatest workroom. I struggle to describe how orderly it is.

June 12: Biosphere2 and Tucson for dinner : We stopped at the Picacho Nut and Candy store on the way to Biosphere 2. Turns out Biosphere 1 is the rest of the Earth. B2 has a good web site at http://www.b2science.org/ . It's a fascinating place; some of it has eery and scary beauty. It's also an important scientific installation. We finished off with dinner in Tucson.

January 11 2009, a slow day at the Pinal County Fairgrounds : First, GO EAGLES!!!. Having said that, Lynda and Marlena did some food shopping, Peter took care of some business, and I watched the first half of the game. We spent the early part of the afternoon doing some shopping, and I was able to see the last three minutes of the game. We wound up at the Pinal County Fairgrounds, too late for the tractor pull. Hence, the paucity of photos. The last photo is part of the sky around here at sunset, the color of the rocks in Sedona.

January 10 2009 Queen Creek and the Mystery Castle in Phoenix : Our first stop was one of my favorite places, Queen Creek Olive Mill. They make the best olive oil I've ever had, except possibly for Castelventranno. Then we went to a place we found accidentally, Schnepf's farm. There's a small restaurant - fairly mediocre foods - and a pick-it-yourself farm. Once again, in ways otherwise unimaginable, let the pictures speak for themselves. Finally, we went to the Mystery Castle in Phoenix. There's a good Wiki article on it, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_Castle . The daughter of the builder/owner was there, hopefully in more than a corporeal way, and we had a brief chat.

January 9 2009 in Tempe, Phoenix and Scottsdale : After Peter enriched himself further, we went to lunch in Tempe at Chopsy's, an attempt to recreate a New York deli in Arizona. The portions were more than ample and the food was good. It's a small local chain. Then we went to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix to see the gardens and the Chihuly Studio Glass installations. Hopefully, the photos speak for themselves. There's more information on the Garden and exhibit at http://dbg.org/index.php/chihuly . After that we went to Michael's and Leo's house for dinner. They just put in a new kitchen (which I envy) and they've done a n amazing job with their garden and the view from it (they had to knock down a wall to accomplish).

Casa Grande January 8 2009 : Casa Grande January 8. We started today going to one of the houses Peter and Jason were preparing for tenants. Jason was repairing a window. Then we went to lunch at the Francisco Grand hotel, a resort in the desert west of Casa Grande. It had been used as a Spring training ground by the San Francisco Dodgers, and John Wayne stayed there frequently. Lunch was surprisingly good. After that we went back into town to the Casa Grande Historical Society museum. Very interesting story telling about the Ho hokum indians, who left the area mysteriously 700 years ago, the later Pima Indians, European settlers and the African American community. Later we went to Coolidge looking for stuff. I took no photos, although I should go back. It's not a ghost town but very nearly a corpse.

Casa Grande Jan. 7 2008 : Our first full day in Casa Grande. Marlena and Lynda went to the movies with the girls. Peter, Jason and I spent the day inspecting some houses Pete had bought to use as rentals. It's a good time to buy houses in Casa Grande, and Pete, as usual, is being very smart. We also went to Patrick Dykes' shops. We had dinner with the Dykes last night. They have a business that builds, rebuilds and provides parts for antique Chevy and GMC trucks. The parts yard was a fascinating museum of doors, fenders, windows and axels. The finishing shop has some beautiful works in progress. The GMC Suburban is a 1947-48 model that's been rebuilt from the bones up, and even has air conditioning.

Stony Brook Grist Mill in Brewster : Marlena and I went to the grist mill to sample some corn bread. It's a working mill staffed by volunteers and was selling freshly ground corn meal - ground for each individual as they waited. The place was jammed. Marlena waited in line while I took a walk around the mill pond and races. There were swans - two adults and a juvenile.

After Sunset : I haven't taken any photos of the sunset this season, probably because they get boring after a while. Tonight I had the urge to go down to the beach. I got there after the sun had set, which was just fine. I always enjoyed the colors and textures of the sky and water after the sun went down but before it became dark. I like the results. The windows houses on North Sunken Meadow reflected the light of the lowered sun, and the sky in the side mirror of the truck looked lovely.

The Lemperts Visit : Linda and Spence spent a couple of days with us, and they were really lovely company. We went to Chatham on Friday. A hawk was sitting on top of a steeple and I got some neat shots. On the way out we got stuck in traffic in front of the Chatham Bars Inn. A photographer was shooting a bride on a balcony of the inna, and I got a great stock-photo shot of them. Sunday we drove to Provincelands and had lunch at the Bookstore. Oh, glorious oysters! We crossed Uncle Tim's bridge; the first time ever for us.

Three Days In Almonte With The Dolgoys : We spent three days in May in Almonte, Ontario, with our cousins, Reva and Len Dolgoy, on the banks of the mighty Mississippi. Adapter experiments : I bought an adapter to allow my Canon to use FD lenses (very different mount from EOS) which are plentiful and cheap. I bought a 19-mm Vivitar FD mount lens (total investment about $90.00 including shipping). Manual focus - which I don't mind - and have to set the camera to aperture priority; since I learned on that sort of lens, not much of a problem to do. At any rate, this is the first set of shots. I like the range of the lens, and I can correct for chromatic aberration in Photoshop. This is the first day's experiments, indoors and outdoors, with and without flash.

Arizona Day 6 : Hard to believe that we've been here almost a week, and are leaving tomorrow. We've covered much ground and had a great time. Lovely, cool, sunny weather, magnificent scenery, and great friendships. Today we went into old town Casa Grande. It's being revived slowly like many older towns in the country. Days Four and Five in Arizona : Saturday we went to Tucson to have dinner with Debra Nordstrom, a friend of Lynda and Peter. On the way we stopped at an ostrich farm at the foot of Picacho peak, the site of the only Civil War battle in Arizona. Debra's house is amazing, and the photos don't do it justice. We had dinner at Wildflowers in Tucson. Many photo ops, but I didn't have the right camera. Sunday we went to the Queen Creek olive Mill. They have a large olive grove, which we couldn't get to because of flooding, and they use the fruit exclusively for olive oil production. We're going to order on line from them. After that we drove to Florence, the county seat of Pinal County. The area had been settled over a thousand years ago by the Ho'ho'kum tribe, which then seemed to disappear. By the middle of the 19th Century, the area had been resettled for agricultural purposes by Anglos, Meixcans, Apaches and Pimas. The Gila river was free flowing then, and provided excellent irrigation. Silver was discovered in the late 19th Century, and Florence became a boom tow. The town remains viable largely due to it being the county seat, and the home of an extensive prison complex. We ended up in Coolidge, which is depressingly becoming a ghost town.

Day One in Arizona : Our first day started at Michael's salon in Scottsdale. Marlena and I both got haircuts - mine was more of a challenge. Michael, all joking aside, is very creative and very competent. And a very nice person. We then went to lunch with Michael, Leo, Kathy (Leo's mom) and Peter and Lynda to Arcadia Farms, a very special place. Later we drove through Arizona State and went to a gallery in Tempe. But the camera battery died, so the following is the photo log that we had for the day.

Sol's last birthday party before his 40th birthday party the day after his 39th birthday : The three men I admire most, Sol came in from the river's side, Ari schlepped in from the coast, and Micah took two hours to stroll three blocks. But we were all there, in no particular order, of course: Solomon, Carol, Naomi, Rebekah, Joel, Ethan, Allen, Carol Anne the heartbreaker, Alice, Samuel, Harry and Ben, Ari, Micah and The Holly, Caroline and Don, Lazar, and of supreme importance, Marlena, without whom a sizable fraction of the preceding wouldn't exist, or have been fed today. So happy birthday, Solomon J., and happy day to us all the rest. We were together and that's all that matters. By the way, Sam took a number of these photos, as did Lazar.

Newport October 9 2007 : Our first stop with Peter and Lynda was Newport. We stayed overnight at the Day's Inn in Middletown, and had a lovely dinner at the Glass Onion. The next day, we went into town to sight see. Our longest stop was at the Breakers, the summer mansion built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The Breakers is huge, with enormous rooms. The Vanderbilts mimicked the lifestyles - real or imagined - of European nobility, although I don't think walling in the local Jews for the evening was a common practice in 19th Century Rhode Island. We weren't permitted to take photographs inside the building. The bedrooms are very large, and very cold. Cornelius and his wife had separate bedrooms, but they probably shared the connecting bathroom, which had a toilet, a large tub, and a sitzbath. In fact, all of the bathrooms had sitzbaths. Apparently, the tush of an American had to be soaked ala the European tush. They looked impossible to get in and out of on one's own; we assumed there was a tush soaking assistant somewhere around to help in the process. The family also transported their silverware from Newport to New York and back. All wealth has its limits, eh? The place is cold, literally and figuratively. None of us could imagine living there.

Wellfleet Audobon : Finally got to the Audobon today. It was cloudy, so the photos are not as good as I'd like. The large bird is an immature green heron. The other bird pictures are of a kingfisher, a very small, fast bird. It flies over the pond, then hovers, and drops into the water.

Whispering Walls 1973 : Some time in the Spring of 1973 I took the boys to the Whispering Walls. That's not an official description. They're curved concrete benches which are part of a Civil War monument at 41st and Parkside in Fairmount Park. Because of an acoustical oddity which I do not understand, if you sit at one end of the wall, and someone else sits at the other end, you can talk very softly into the wall, you can be heard clearly by the other person. It is very magical. I was born across the street from that part of the park. My dad and I would go there regularly - he loved to walk - and talk to each other; sometimes tell each other secrets or tales. I took the boys there several times, and Ari has taken his boys there. It is reasonable to assume that Holly and Micah will take Alice there, as will I. We all need to share our stories with our parents and grandparents, whether they are secret stories or not.

Scanned Slides January 1974 : It's hard to date these slides. The slide frames are dated January 1974, but the photos may have been taken some time before. I'd leave film undeveloped for a while; lack of funds and laziness. But, from the looks of the kids, that time period is probably accurate. Most we taken in the kitchen on Covington Road.
